Deepest Lake In The World

Lake Baikal (Baikal) in Siberia, Russia is the deepest lake in the world measuring 1620m deep at its deepest point. This makes it not only deep but also the oldest lake in the world estimated to be around 25 million years old. At over 636 kilometers long and 80 kilometers wide this fresh water lake holds over 20 percent of all the fresh water in the world and is second in size only to the Caspian Sea (the caspian is called a sea but is technically a lake).

To put things into perspective the lake is so big that if all the rivers in the world flowed into its basin it would take almost 1 year to fill. We all know Siberia isn’t the warmest of places so you can imagine what a phenomenal site it is when in the winter months the lake freezes over holding ice up to 115 meters thick. Now that’s a lot of ice!

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

Let's say it's 6.15pm and you're going home (alone of course),
after an unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself..!!

NOW HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE..

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.
A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.
Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

How Steve Jobs Took the iPhone Trademark From Cisco

Adam Lashinsky explains how Steve Jobs walked all over Cisco to get the iPhone trademark in his new book, Inside Apple.

CultofMac notes that Cisco, a large enterprise computing company, not only owned the iPhone trademark for years before Apple. It also owned the IOS trademark before Apple began using it. So how was Apple able to use these marks?

Lashinsky tells the story of how Steve Jobs had his way with Charles Giancarlo, a Cisco executive at the time:
Giancarlo fielded a call directly from Steve Jobs. "Steve called in and said that he wanted it," Giancarlo recalled. "He didn't offer us anything for it. It was just like a promise he'd be our best friend. And we said, 'No, we're planning on using it.' " Shortly after that, Apple's legal department called to say they thought Cisco had "abandoned the brand," meaning that in Apple's legal opinion Cisco hadn't adequately defended its intellectual property rights by promoting the name. To Apple's way of thinking this meant the name iPhone was available for Apple's use. Giancarlo, who subsequently joined the prominent Silicon Valley private-equity firm Silver Lake Partners, said Cisco threatened litigation before the launch. Then, the day after Apple announced its iPhone, Cisco filed suit.

The negotiation displayed some classic Steve Jobs negotiating tactics. Giancarlo said Jobs called him at home at dinnertime on Valentine's Day, as the two sides were haggling. Jobs talked for a while, Giancarlo related. "And then he said to me, 'Can you get email at home?' " Giancarlo was taken aback. This was 2007, after all, when broadband Internet was ubiquitous in homes in the US, let alone that of a Silicon Valley executive who had worked for years on advanced Internet technology. "And he's asking me if I'm able to get email at home. You know he's just trying to press my buttons-in the nicest possible way." Cisco gave up the fight shortly after that. The two sides reached a vague agreement to cooperate on areas of mutual interest.

According to the book, rights to use the iOS trademark were negotiated prior to Apple going live with the name; however, it's said that Jobs got his way throughout the proceedings.

He also practiced amputation, caesarean and cranial surgeries, and developed 125 surgical instruments including scalpels, lancets, and needles.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
◦☼◦Lord Atreya - author of Charak Samhita. Circa 8th - 6th century BCE. Perhaps the most referred to Rishi/physician today The Charak Samhita was the first compilation of all aspects of ayurvedic medicine including diagnoses, cures, anatomy, embryology, pharmacology, and blood circulation (excluding surgery).
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

☼◦Lord Atreya wrote about causes and cures for diabetes, TB, and heart diseases. At that time, European medicine had no idea of these ideas. In fact, even today many of these disease causes and cures are still unknown to modern allopathic medicine.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

◦☼◦Sage Kanad (circa 600 BCE) is recognized as the founder of atomic theory, and classified all the objects of creation into nine elements (earth, water, light or fire, wind, ether, time, space, mind and soul). He stated that every object in creation is made of atoms that in turn connect with each other to form molecules nearly 2,500 years before John Dalton. Further, Kanad described the dimension and motion of atoms, and the chemical reaction with one another. The eminent historian, T.N. Colebrook said, "Compared to scientists of Europe, Kanad and other Indian scientists were the global masters in this field."

◦☼◦Sage Aryabhatt (b. 476 CE) wrote texts on astronomy and mathematics. He formulated the process of calculating the motion of planets and the time of eclipses. Aryabhatt was the first to proclaim the earth was round, rotating on an axis, orbiting the sun and suspended in space. This was around 1,000 years before Copernicus. He was a geometry genius credited with calculating pi to four decimal places, developing the trigonomic sine table and the area of a triangle. Perhaps his most important contribution was the concept of the zero. Details are found in Shulva sutra. Other sages of mathematics include Baudhayana, Katyayana, and Apastamba.

Google, MIT bestow App Inventor to the unwashed masses

Google must be feeling generous: it donated Sky Map to undeserving armchair astronomers and it's letting the great unwashed get at its App Inventor development platform. The software toolset was cooked up in partnership with MIT: a web-based interface that lets anyone build Android apps without getting elbows-deep in code. Those Massachusetts king-geeks won't be accepting submissions just yet, however: it's still got to work out how it's going to deploy the public server and foster a "robust and active open-source project" under its new name: the moderately unimaginative MIT App Inventor.

Mr. Dotcom

Kim Schmitz legally changed his surname to Dotcom at some point over the last decade, a homage to the technology that made him a millionaire and that has now landed him in a New Zealand jail.
The 38-year-old Internet entrepreneur was arrested Thursday at his birthday celebration inside a 25,000-square-foot mansion in Auckland. When police entered the property, Mr. Dotcom fled to a safe room, where he was found with a loaded shotgun, officials said.

Mr. Dotcom was charged with criminal copyright infringement and conspiracy to commit racketeering. The Federal Bureau of Investigation shut down his Hong Kong-based website, which it claims was used to pirate half a billion dollars worth of entertainment content.

The husky Mr. Dotcom is a kingpin in a little-exposed side of the Internet economy, who profited by tapping changes in technology, roiling the entertainment industry.

His company, Megaupload Ltd., and similar online storage sites known as cyber lockers, have many legitimate uses, such as allowing people to share large presentation files and home movies.
But U.S. authorities and entertainment executives say in court documents and interviews that cyber lockers are at the vanguard of online piracy. On Friday, the U.S. Congress abandoned two controversial antipiracy bills.

Despite the legal controversy brewing around his website—and a previous conviction for insider trading—Mr. Dotcom didn't lay low or hide anonymously behind his computer.

Rather, Mr. Dotcom openly enjoyed a lavish lifestyle. He owned at least 18 luxury cars—including a 1959 pink Cadillac and three cars with vanity license plates that read "HACKER," "MAFIA," and "STONED," according to U.S. officials—flew helicopters, and personally funded the city of Auckland's 2010 New Year's fireworks celebration.

He also raced cars in the Gumball 3000 Rally, a Cannonball Run-like global competition on public roads in locations that change every year. In at least one Gumball race, Mr. Dotcom was videotaped driving a black Mercedes sedan in which he zipped past a police officer. Referring to his nickname, Mr. Dotcom smiled into the camera, saying, "Dr. Evil is always getting away with it."

While operating Megaupload, Mr. Dotcom both fought with Hollywood and embraced its celebrity, last year convincing several rappers, actors and musicians to record a promotional video for his site.
Before the site was taken down by authorities on Thursday, Megaupload also listed as its CEO hip-hop super-producer Swizz Beatz, also known as Kasseem Dean and the husband of singer Alicia Keys.

A spokeswoman for Swizz Beatz on Friday confirmed her client had been named CEO, but added: "We're trying to clarify" whether the appointment actually went into effect.

Mr. Dotcom couldn't be reached for comment on Friday in Auckland, where he appeared at the North Shore District Court for a bail hearing and awaits extradition to the U.S. His local lawyer, Paul Davison, didn't return a call seeking comment.

In the U.S., Megaupload's case was taken up on Thursday by Washington, D.C., lawyer Robert S. Bennett, known for representing President Bill Clinton when he was accused of sexual harassment by Paula Jones. "We will vigorously defend against the charges," Mr. Bennett said.Mr. Dotcom has boasted about his past. In an autobiographical piece he penned for the blog TorrentFreak.com in December, he wrote, "Find me a Wikipedia profile of a person that is worse than mine and I will buy you dinner." He shared photos of himself carrying a rifle and standing in front of a luxury car with a license plate that reads "GUILTY."
He continued: "I made mistakes when I was young and I paid the price. Steve Jobs was a hacker and Martha Stuart [sic] is doing well after her insider trading case." He said he was married with "three adorable children with two more on the way."

German by birth, Mr. Dotcom first came to prominence in Berlin for his computer hacking skills, according to Andreas Bogk, a hacker and member of the Chaos Computer Club. Mr. Bogk said he didn't know Mr. Dotcom personally, but that Mr. Dotcom was on the scene in the 1990s.
At the time, Mr. Dotcom set up a software-hacker community and a computer system used to upload pirated software from others, Mr. Bogk said. Mr. Dotcom charged people for access to the system and the pirated software, which was mostly games, Mr. Bogk adds.

In 2001, Mr. Dotcom got in legal trouble when he offered to rescue an ailing online shopping club, Letsbuyit.com NV. He promised to invest $50 million in the company, which boosted the stock—but then he sold his shares after investing little more than $1 million.
As a result, he was found guilty of insider trading in 2002 after being extradited from Thailand to Germany, according to a spokeswoman for the court. He was given a suspended prison sentence and fined, according to press reports.

Mr. Dotcom later started a new life in Hong Kong, where he was the mastermind behind Megaupload, among other businesses.
It's not clear when or how Mr. Dotcom came to befriend hip-hop stars like Mr. Dean, known as Swizz Beatz. But the musician thought he could persuade Mr. Dotcom to transform Megaupload into a legitimate, licensed music service, according to a person familiar with the matter.

While Megaupload was based in Hong Kong, Mr. Dotcom lived in New Zealand. There, he was arrested at his sprawling property, worth some $24 million, situated in Auckland's outskirts.

The home, with a sign in front that reads "Dotcom Mansion" and a large giraffe and rhinoceros sculpture, also has an extensive security system including three gates, manned security guards and security cameras, said New Zealand Police detective inspector Grant Wormald.

Google indian

Google India, which along with 20 websites is facing criminal case for allegedly hosting objectionable materials, told the Delhi High Court that blocking them was not an option as a democratic India does not have a "totalitarian" regime like China.

"The issue relates to a constitutional issue of freedom of speech and expression and suppressing it was not possible as the right to freedom of speech in democratic India separates us from a totalitarian regime like China," advocate N K Kaul, appearing for Google India, told Justice Suresh Kait.

During last hearing, Justice Kait had warned Google India and social networking site Facebook India that websites can be "blocked" like in China if they fail to devise a mechanism to check and remove objectionable material from their web pages.

Responding to the court's remark, Kaul referred to media reports on the issue saying "they (reports) suggest the existance of the right (freedom of speech)."

Initiating arguments, Kaul said internet is a global system which have billions of users that also included companies, private persons and the governments and their departments. He filed a representation in the court and said an online search for a word like "virgin" has 82.30 crore search results within 0.33 seconds and the idea of blocking a word like this would deprive net-users the required information.

"The queries could relate to Virgin Airlines or for that matter 'virgin areas for inventions', he said.

Seeking quashing of the summons issued against the firm by a lower court, he said Google India is neither a search engine nor a web hosting site and was a distinct legal entity from its US-based holding company Google Inc, a search engine. "No criminal liability can be fastened on Google India," he said.

The counsel for the website sought to distinguish between Google India and its US-based holding company Google Inc.

Google Inc is a service provider and not the Google India and hence, it (Google India) cannot be held accountable for any alleged offence committed by its holding company, he said.

Even Google Inc cannot be held accountable for the acts of third parties who simply used the websites for posting or publishing "obscene or objectionable" materials, Kaul said and gave illustrations as to how search engines act. "Search engines like Google Inc does not and cannot control the websites to which users are transported to by them. The contents belong to the websites to which the users have visited and not to the search engines," he said.

"I (Google Inc) have nothing to do with the websites and their (offending) contents to which the users are being transported to. Because it is the third parties (websites) which are responsible for the contents," he said. The issuance of summons to Google India reflected lack of understanding on the part of trial judge as to how the system (internet) functions, he said.

"It's not the case of anybody that the alleged contents were good or bad. Of course, they were terrible but there are practical difficulties (in checking them). The persons responsible for all the contents have not been made parties.

"We are seeking to prosecute the websites which have done a great service to the world. This problem has arisen world wide in various forms and it is not that we in India are faced with such problems," he said.

However, Vinay Rai, who had filed the complaint against 21 websites, opposed the plea of Google India. "Google India, like its holding firm Google Inc, is also a search engine and in fact, they are same as out of 1,91, 295 shares of Google India, 1,91, 294 shares are being held by its holding company," the counsel for Rai said.

The counsel for Rai also referred to the Memorandum of Association , annual returns and the directors' report of Google India to drive home his allegations that Indian and its US-based holding firms were the same. If the corporate veil is lifted, then it would become clear that they were the same and equally culpable, he said adding the veil could be lifted for a public cause, he said. Google India is culpable because it is earning for its US-based holding company, he added.

The of Google India has listed the function of a search engine as one of its objects and the plea that it was not a search engine was "untenable", he said.

"The holding company (Google Inc) has got a pervasive control on its subsidiary Google India," he said.

Advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Facebook India, questioned the authenticity of the documents, including CDs, provided by the complainant to the court. "The CDs, which have not been authenticated, cannot be used in evidence. The electronic records have to meet the legal requirements for being treated as evidence," he said and cited the apex court judgement in the Tehelka expose case.

The lower court, while issuing summons to it and others, had erred by not taking an opinion from an expert body regarding genuineness of the CDs.

The court would resume hearing in the case on January 19. Earlier, the Centre had filed a report in the lower court saying there was sufficient material to proceed against 21 websites, including Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, for alleged offences of promoting enmity between classes and causing prejudice to national integration.

The Centre's report was filed after the lower court had directed the Ministry of External Affairs to get the summons served on over ten foreign-based companies which could not be served with the summons.

The magistrate had on December 23 issued summons to 21 websites for allegedly committing offences of criminal conspiracy, sale of obscene books and sale of obscene objects to young persons.

Out of 21 websites, Google India and Facebook India moved the High Court against the magistrate's order saying the summons be quashed as they did not commit any offence.

Google India sought discharge from the case saying it was not responsible and moreover, postings of "obscene, objectionable and defamatory" articles and other things cannot be "filtered" or "monitored".

Citing provisions of the Information Technology Act, Google India said websites are protected by the law so far as such "objectionable" material is concerned as they are not the authors.

Spy Things

Wi-Spy Helicopter and Intruder RC toys put the childlike wonder back into spying on your neighbours

Sick and tired of spying on the neighbors the old-fashioned way? Good news, all. Interactive Toy Designs showed off two new products in its not-so-subtly named Wi-Spy line of remote control vehicles. Really driving the notion home is the Intruder, the name given to the little red sports car. The helicopter, on the other hand, is called just that, though we're sure you can intrude upon people with the thing, if you really put your mind to it. Both vehicles have built-in cameras that beam live feeds to your iPhone or Android devices. You can also record the video and upload it instantly to social networking sites, to really get that spying 2.0 feel. The Intruder and Helicopter are both arriving in the fall, for $100 and $120, respectively.

Apple's iPhone

Apple's iPhone edged past major news events, celebrities and pop stars as the top searched term on the Web in 2011, according to Yahoo! The digital media company said the smartphone proved more popular than reality television celebrity Kim Kardashian, pop star Katy Perry and singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, who placed in the top five.

American Casey Anthony, the woman acquitted of the murder of her young daughter after a highly publicised trial, was No 2. "This is the first time since 2002 that we have had a gadget at No 1, which is an iPhone." Vera Chan, a Web trend analyst at Yahoo!, said in a conference call announcing the results of the review now in its 10th year. "Even though the product has been around for four years it just became such a major news story," she added. PlayStation2 topped the list in 2002.

Chan credited the iPhone with helping to facilitate political movements around the world and said the device embodied the vision of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs who died in October. Women dominated the list, capturing six out of the top 10 spots.

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan made headlines for a brief stay in jail and court appearances for violating probation on drunken driving and theft charges captured the No 6 spot. Actress Jennifer Aniston, a first timer on the top 10 list along with Lopez, came in eighth. In addition to the Casey Anthony trial, the Japan earthquake and Osama bin Laden who was killed in a US assault in Pakistan earlier this year, were the only news stories to make the top 10.

"People don't have to search for details they get in the news, and it is rare that a news story end up on the overall list," said Chan. Pop princess Britney Spears, who dominated the list in the top spot for four consecutive years, failed to make the list his year. "American Idol," which was the most search item in 2004, placed seventh. The Yahoo! list is based on aggregated visitor activity on the network and billions of consumer searches.

Sony cuts Tablet

sony cuts Tablet S price by $100, now starts at $400 for 16GB

New year, new pricing strategy? We just got word that Sony's cut the price of its 9.4-inch Tablet S by $100, so that it now starts at $400 for the 16GB model, and $500 for the 32GB flavor. The move follows a temporary $50 price cut, which Sony announced on December 15th and said would last through the end of the year. So, the fact that the outfit has lowered the price by another fifty bucks, and permanently, can't bode well for sell-through figures. In any case, that takes the Tablet S out of Transformer Prime and iPad 2 territory, though it now finds itself in an increasingly crowded field of mid-range slates, a category populated by the likes of the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, the original ASUS Transformer and both Toshiba Thrive tablets.
